Ruins of the Zvartnots Temple, 1948

The ruins of the Zvartnots Temple in a photograph of 1948. Stone fragments lie arranged on the ground: an arch with a carved band, columns with capitals, and slabs. A man in a dark suit stands on the grass beside the fragments.

Zvartnots is a church dedicated to Saint Gregory the Illuminator, a monument of 7th-century Armenian architecture. It is located near Yerevan and Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat). In 2000 the ruins of the temple and the surrounding archaeological area were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
