Active Armenian churches in the early 20th century

The number of active Armenian Apostolic churches at the beginning of the 20th century (only active churches, i.e. those where the liturgy was celebrated, are counted). All the churches in the photographs were destroyed by Turks and Azerbaijanis.

The largest numbers of churches were in the vilayet of Baghesh (Bitlis), 671; the vilayet of Van, 537; the vilayet of Karin (Erzurum), 482; the Yerevan governorate, 446; the Karabakh province, 429; and the vilayet of Kharberd (Harput), 307. The list also includes Western Anatolia, the vilayets of Sebastia (Sivas) and Tigranakert (Diyarbakır), Cilicia, the governorates of Tiflis (Tbilisi) and Baku, Jerusalem and other places. The worldwide total is 4,455 churches.

The photograph shows a stone church with a conical dome; people are walking past, and a Russian slogan is painted on the wall of a building on the left.
