Church of the Holy Apostles in Kars
The Church of the Holy Apostles, or Church of the Twelve Apostles, at the foot of Kars fortress is a cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church that was turned into a mosque. It was built in the 10th century under King Abas I Bagratuni (928–953), when Kars had become the capital of Armenia; 11th-century sources write about this. The cathedral repeats the 7th-century Church of St John the Baptist in Mastara.
In 1579 Sultan Mustafa Pasha turned the cathedral into the Kümbet Mosque (domed mosque), which is now part of a large Islamic complex that also includes the largest mosque in Kars, the Evliya Mosque. It is believed that the mosque of Suleyman Efendi mentioned by Evliya Çelebi in the 17th century is in fact this church.
The photograph shows the church with a conical dome topped by a cross and sculptures on the drum. A minaret is visible on the left, and several people stand by the walls.
