Armenian orphans of the Alexandropol orphanages
Armenian orphans in the orphanages of Alexandropol (Gyumri) after the Genocide. During the Armenian Genocide in Western Armenia, hundreds of thousands of children lost their parents. From 1915, shelters for homeless children were opened first in Kars and, after Kars was captured, in Alexandropol. In 1915–1917, 8 orphanages were opened there, sheltering 500 Armenian children who had come from Western Armenia. The first orphanage opened on 20 November 1915.
The orphans were provided with food, clothing and medical care. They spent part of the day at school and part in workshops. The orphanages operated until 1927–1929.
The photograph shows many children and several adults standing in front of a stone wall.
