A brother and sister separated during the Genocide
This photograph shows a brother and sister who had lost each other during the forced deportations in the days of the Genocide. Separated as children, they had passed along the roads of death marches, hunger and the desert. By the will of fate they met again in the Syrian desert, in Deir ez-Zor.
The girl stands in a long dark dress, one hand on her brother’s shoulder and the other holding his hand. The boy is half-naked, with a cloth wrapped around his waist. Behind them is the wall of a building. The image is a silent testimony that even after passing through loss and death, the bond of blood can prevail and keep hope alive.
