Girls at their mother's grave

The photograph shows 2 Armenian girls kneeling before their mother's grave. One is praying with her palms pressed together; the other sits in silence with her hands in her lap. In front of them is a mound of earth covered with stones, and behind them a wall. The girls wear long dresses and bands on their heads.

The picture belongs to the beginning of the Genocide, when children were left without parents and without protection. Their childhood was cut short at this very moment.
