Consecration of St. Gevorg Church in Marash, 1907
The photograph was taken on 16 June 1907 in the town of Marash (Kahramanmaraş). On that day the Church of St. Gevorg was consecrated. In 1895, during the Hamidian massacres, the church had been burned. Despite those hard times, the surviving Armenians returned and began to restore their church.
The photograph shows the large crowd taking part in the ceremony. In the centre are clergy in church vestments, surrounded by men and children, many of them wearing fezzes. People also stand on rooftops decorated with branches.
