Master Poghos’s khachkar at Goshavank
The photograph shows the khachkar standing in the Goshavank monastery complex, created by Master Poghos in 1291. The khachkar rests on a stone pedestal bearing an inscription and stands against a wall whose stones are carved with small crosses. At the centre is the cross with a round ornament beneath it, and the borders are decorated with star-shaped patterns.
The carving stands out for its finely interlaced ornament and the harmonious combination of plant and geometric motifs. According to historical sources, Master Poghos made only 4 khachkars in his lifetime, all of which have survived, and he worked on this one for almost 10 years.
