The “Surb Terunakan” khachkar, Dsegh

The “Surb Terunakan” (or “Beautiful”) khachkar stands on the north-eastern edge of the village of Dsegh in Lori Province, opposite the village of Karinj, on the left edge of the gorge of the Marts River. State list number: 5.35.22.

With its pedestal the khachkar is 4.20 m high; it is carved from pink tuff. At the top is the enthroned Saviour, with the abbreviations ՅՍ ՔՍ (Jesus Christ) on either side. The khachkar stands on a three-stepped pedestal. It is in relatively good condition; only the lower part of the left arm of the cross is damaged. Beneath the flowering cross is a symbolic image of the globe (the ornament in the lower left part of the relief is damaged).

The monument is dated to the 13th century, although it may also be attributed to an earlier period.
