The slab of the “Armenian well” in Yazlovets, 1611
In Yazlovets, near the former Armenian church dating from 1551, there is a spring known as the “Armenian well”, a complex water structure built by Armenians in the 17th century. In its closed underground part the “Ukraine Incognita” expedition photographed a carved slab dated 1611.
At the top of the slab is an eagle with outspread wings, and below it a cross with plant ornament. The Latin inscription states that the Armenian Hakob built it for the good of the community in 1611. According to the Armenian inscription, the cross and the spring are the work of Hakob and his brother Stepan, completed in the Armenian year 1060, and the carving was done by master Abram. The date 1787 carved at the top is the year of reconstruction.
