The Church of the Forty Martyrs in Aleppo
The Armenian Cathedral of the Forty Martyrs stands in Al-Jdayde, the old Christian quarter of Aleppo. It was consecrated in 1491. After being damaged by terrorists, the church was restored and reconsecrated on 30 March 2019.
Most Syrian Armenians are descendants of Armenians from Western Armenia who arrived in the first half of the 20th century. Until 2011 the Armenian community of Syria was considered one of the largest in the world, and Aleppo was the centre of Armenian educational and cultural institutions, with 9 Armenian schools.
The photograph shows the church's stone bell tower with a clock, and stones on the façade with Armenian inscriptions and carvings resembling khachkars.
