The Mughrdechyan family in Ekaterinodar

The photograph shows the Mughrdechyan family. This passport photograph was taken in the city of Ekaterinodar (Krasnodar) on 10 October 1917, in the last years of the Russian Empire.

Seven people are in the picture: an elderly bearded man holding an infant, an elderly woman in a headscarf, two young women, a youth in a cap and a little girl. Behind them is a painted backdrop, with plants and bundles of hay at their feet. At the bottom there is a handwritten inscription in Armenian.

The photograph bears witness to the presence of Armenian migrants in the south of the Caucasus and to the continuity of their family life during a turning point in history.
