Interior of San Gregorio Armeno, Naples
The church of San Gregorio Armeno and its adjoining convent in Naples (Italy) form an important Baroque church complex. The church was built in the 10th century by Armenian nuns who had fled Byzantine iconoclasm and brought with them the relics of Saint Gregory the Illuminator of Armenia. It stands on the street of the same name, known for its workshops making Christmas crib figures.
The coffers of the ceiling hold paintings of the life of Saint Gregory, and the dome bears Luca Giordano’s fresco “The Glory of Saint Gregory”.
The photograph shows the gilded carved walls and ceiling, the black-and-white chequered floor and two rows of wooden pews.
