The Church of Surb Mariam Astvatsatsin, Vanadzor

The Church of Surb Mariam Astvatsatsin (Holy Mary, Mother of God) in Vanadzor, Armenia. The photograph dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

At the foot of the mountains stands the domed stone church with a small bell tower on its front. A large crowd has gathered around the church and on the hillside: men, women and children, among them soldiers in white uniforms. On the right are oxen and carts, on the left a group of women and children in national costume, and on the hill stone monuments.
