Wall painting in the church of Saghmosavank
The photograph shows a wall painting inside the church of Saghmosavank. Saghmosavank, standing on the edge of a canyon, dates to 1215, when the church of Surb Sion was built here by order of Prince Vache Vachutyan. On its western and southern sides the monastery was surrounded by a large vestibule (gavit) and a library, whose composition is among the rarest in Armenia. Many tombs and khachkars can be seen on the monastery grounds.
The painting shows a figure with a golden halo, in a dark mantle over a light garment, one hand on the chest. The face is damaged. At the upper right is a red-and-white striped tent-like canopy, at the upper left clouds.
