Vardges Sureniants, “Salome”
The painting “Salome” is by Vardges Hakobi Sureniants, an Armenian painter, graphic artist, theatre designer and art theorist. He was the eldest of the group of major representatives of Armenian art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born on 27 February 1860 in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia, and died on 6 April 1921 in Yalta.
The painting shows a standing woman in a long dress with floral patterns, a patterned shawl over her shoulders and a small cap on her head. In the background is an ornamented wall, and on the right a surface with golden patterns. The artist’s signature is in the lower left corner.
