Shield inscribed by Rusa I, king of Urartu

A shield with an inscription of Rusa I, king of Urartu.

Rusa I (Rusa, son of Sarduri) was king of Urartu from 735 to 714 BC. He tried to restore to Urartu the greatness lost by his father, Sarduri II, but in the end suffered a heavy defeat from the Assyrian king Sargon II and took his own life.

The metal shield has a domed centre and is decorated with concentric bands of animal figures. The central part is damaged and the rim is bent.
