Mushegh Mamikonyan, Commander of the Armenian Army
Mushegh Mamikonyan was an Armenian military leader, a sparapet (commander-in-chief), a member of the Mamikonyan noble (princely) house and one of the most outstanding commanders of 4th-century Armenia. In 371, under his command, the united Armenian and Roman forces defeated the Persians at the Battle of Bagrevand, near Mount Npat. This victory temporarily thwarted the plans of the Sasanian king Shapur II to conquer Armenia and allowed King Pap to establish himself on the Armenian throne.
During Pap’s reign, the army led by Mushegh regained many border provinces lost during the anarchy of 368–370, among them Artsakh, Utik and Gugark. In the north, the Kura River once again became the border with Albania.
In this engraving Mushegh is shown with a plumed helmet, a fur cloak and a weapon in his hand. His name is written in English below.
