Armenian woman’s costume of the Bagratid period
The photograph comes from Gregory Lima’s collection “Costumes of Armenian Women” (1974). It presents the costume of an Armenian woman of the Bagratid dynasty period, 9th–13th centuries. The Bagratids (Bagratuni) were an Armenian princely family, one of the most prominent princely dynasties of Transcaucasia, and from 885 to 1045 the royal dynasty of Armenia.
In the photograph the woman stands on a green slope. She wears a jewelled headdress, a white fur cape with black tails over her shoulders, and a long brown dress. Her hair is plaited into two long braids, and she wears bracelets on her wrists. Mountains and an old church can be seen in the background.
