Portrait of a young Armenian woman from Iran, 17th century

The painting shows a young woman from the Armenian community of Iran. The portrait was made at the end of the 17th century and is now kept in the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. It reflects the cultural setting of the Safavid period, when Armenians played an important role in art and trade.

The woman stands at full length in rich patterned clothing, with a white headscarf that also covers her chin. She holds flowers in her hand. Beside her is a table with grapes and other fruit, and below, a blue vase with flowers. According to the source, the clothing, jewellery and flower symbolise prosperity, taste and high social standing.
