An Armenian Woman of Artsakh in a French Magazine, 1890
The work “An Armenian Woman of Artsakh” by the French artist Charles Barbant was published in 1890 in the well-known French magazine Le Tour du Monde. It presents an Armenian woman of Artsakh on horseback, in national dress and with a restrained bearing.
The woman sits on a light-coloured horse. Her head is covered, and the lower part of her face, up to the eyes, is wrapped in a scarf. She wears a dark outer garment. Behind her another, dark horse is visible, with mountains in the distance.
It is one of the images circulated in the European press that presented the daily life and identity of the Armenian population of Artsakh in the late 19th century.
