The Zangakyan Family in Alexandropol, 1905
The photograph shows the Armenian Zangakyan family. It was taken in 1905 in Alexandropol (Gyumri). At that time Alexandropol was one of the important towns of Eastern Armenia, known for its crafts, trade and rich cultural life.
There are seven people in the picture: a bearded man, two women in traditional dress, a young girl and three small children. The women wear dark dresses and embroidered headbands from which lace veils fall. A small child sits on the man's knee.
Family photographs like this have preserved the memory of the life and traditions of Armenian families of that time.
