The mother of Garegin Nzhdeh

The photograph shows the mother of Garegin Nzhdeh, the great Armenian thinker and leader of the national liberation struggle.

The elderly woman sits in a carved wooden armchair. Her head and shoulders are covered with a dark headscarf, and she wears a dark buttoned coat.

In Nzhdeh's words: “My mother… my sacred one… I remember how every Sunday she would leave the village on foot and walk all the way to Nakhichevan, just to see me in the tsarist prison.”
