Nkhshe Kamalyan, a fighter in the May 1918 battles

The photograph shows Nkhshe Kamalyan, one of the participants in the heroic struggle of Sardarapat, in old age, wearing a white headscarf. She was born in 1892 in the settlement of Bash-Aparan.

From 21 to 29 May 1918, when the Armenian people were fighting for their survival, Nkhshe Kamalyan took part in the battles in military uniform, weapon in hand. She fought on the Bash-Aparan front together with her fellow villager Gyaran Movsisyan.

From 1932 she worked in the fields of a collective farm until she retired. She never married. She died in 1970.
