Forced departure of the Armenian population of Kars, 1920
According to the source, the photograph shows the forced departure of the Armenian population of Kars in October 1920, after the agreement to hand the city over to Turkey.
People walk along a dusty road, mostly women in headscarves, many of them carrying loads on their backs. There is a small child among them. Domestic animals and a rider can be seen on the left.
According to the source, after the handover Kars became the centre from which the Bolsheviks sent aid by rail to Kemal Atatürk for his struggle against the Greek army. The city also became a military base for operations directed against Armenia.
