“Mother of God and Child” by Vardges Sureniants
The canvas “Mother of God and Child” was painted by the great Armenian artist Vardges Sureniants. It is kept in the National Gallery of Armenia.
The painting shows the Mother of God holding the infant Jesus, with an Armenian face and gaze. Haloes surround both their heads. She wears a headscarf, a red dress and a white shawl with golden embroidery. Behind them is a stone wall with columns and carved ornament, and mountains in the distance.
The work is regarded as one of the emblematic creations of Armenian fine art.
