The family carpet cut in two

According to the source, in 1915, during the Armenian Genocide, seeing that there was almost no hope of saving the family, a mother cut the family carpet into two parts and sent her daughters away into the night, telling them to keep their share. The carpet was to keep them warm, protect them and one day help them find each other.

The sisters survived but lost contact with each other. The two halves of the carpet met again only 50 years later. Today the carpet is kept in the Megeryan family collection.

In the photograph the carpet hangs on the wall of an exhibition hall. It has a red central field and a wide light-coloured border. A vertical seam runs down the middle, and the central part is worn and damaged.
