Alexandropol in the early 20th century
The photograph shows the city of Alexandropol (Gyumri), which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was one of the important administrative, military and cultural centres of Eastern Armenia. The picture shows churches with conical domes, low flat-roofed stone buildings and a street stretching into the distance with passers-by.
The city’s stone buildings and churches bear witness to a well-established urban environment. Alexandropol was known for its crafts traditions, trade and large Armenian population. This view is a historical testimony to the city’s architectural character and public life before the later disasters and changes.
