Haghartsin Monastery near Dilijan, 1910
Haghartsin Monastery near Dilijan in a photograph of 1910. Haghartsin is a medieval Armenian monastic complex in the forests of Dilijan, built mainly between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was one of the important spiritual and cultural centres of medieval Armenia.
The photograph is a postcard. In the centre stands the church with a pointed dome; on the right are two more domed buildings, and on the left a long building with a pitched roof. The monastery is surrounded by forested mountains. At the top there is a caption in Russian and French: “Environs of Dilijan. Haghartsin Monastery”.
