Interior of the Church of St Gregory of Tigran Honents, Ani
The photograph shows the interior of the Church of St Gregory of Tigran Honents (St Gregory the Illuminator) in the ruins of Ani. Ani is now in the province of Kars, Turkey. The church was built in 1215, during the rule of the Zakarians, at the commission of the wealthy Armenian merchant Tigran Honents. It is one of the best-preserved buildings in Ani, built in the style of the medieval Armenian cross-domed church.
The interior is unique for its extensive wall paintings, which are rare in Armenian architecture. They show scenes from the life of Christ and from the life of St Gregory the Illuminator. The photograph shows the dome, the arches and the painted walls, with a person standing by the open door.
In 2016 the ruins of Ani, including this church, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
