Ras Al Khaimah, the historic Julfar

Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates) is historically known as Julfar, an important trading port that flourished in the 13th–14th centuries. According to Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah, the city was founded by Armenians who fled Persia during the Mongol invasion, and the name Julfar is of Armenian rather than Arabic origin.

Dhayah Fort dates from the 19th century, on Late Bronze Age foundations, and stands on a 70-metre hill. It is known for the last battle against British forces in 1819, after which the General Maritime Treaty was signed in 1820.
