Galust Aloyan, a figure of the liberation movement
Galust Aloyan was a figure of the Armenian national liberation movement. He founded a weapons workshop first in Tiflis (Tbilisi) and then in Yerevan. The weapons he made were used by Armenian detachments, in particular the group of Sargis Kukunyan. From 1895 he lived in Tabriz, where he worked with other gunsmiths at the local arms factory, and the weapons he made were sent to Van to arm the Armenian fedayi detachments.
In 1897 he took part in preparing the Khanasor expedition. In 1903 he was arrested in Yerevan for revolutionary activity, but after his release he continued the struggle. In 1914 Aloyan was in Bayazet (Doğubayazıt). During an attempt to return to the Caucasus, his group was surrounded by Turkish troops and police, put up desperate resistance, but was completely destroyed.
The photograph shows a bearded man in a hat and a coat with a fur collar, seated on a tree stump.
