Garegin Nzhdeh with comrades-in-arms in Zangezur, 1920
The photograph shows Garegin Nzhdeh with his comrades-in-arms in Zangezur in the autumn of 1920. Three men stand in front of a brick building. Nzhdeh is in the middle, in dark clothing, his head covered, wearing high boots. The comrades standing on either side wear light-coloured shirts and fur hats, with pistol holsters on their belts.
At that time Zangezur had become one of the key centres for preserving Armenian statehood. Nzhdeh led the self-defence struggle under Soviet and Turkish pressure, building an organised system of national resistance. His activity helped keep the region under Armenian control.
