The Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex
The Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan is also known as the “Demirchyan Arena”, the “Sports and Music Complex” or simply “Hamalir” (the Complex). It stands in the western part of Yerevan on the Tsitsernakaberd hill.
The complex was built in 1983 and designed by the Armenian architects A. Tarkhanyan, S. Khachikyan, G. Poghosyan and G. Mushegyan. After a major fire in 1985 it was rebuilt and reopened at the end of 1987. It is one of the largest sports and concert complexes in Yerevan, with two large halls, one for concerts and one for sports. Karen Serobi Demirchyan believed that the complex, built next to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial, would symbolise the rebirth of the Armenian people.
The photograph was taken from above. It shows the round building with a roof shaped like petals and red arched supports, surrounded by a ring road and trees.
