The massacre of Christians in Armenia, 1895

An original woodcut created in 1895, depicting the massacre of Christians in Armenia – the departure of the Armenian population from Turkey. According to the source, it was drawn by Silbonetto and engraved by L. Orte. In some sources it is also known as “Allegory of Persecution” or “Massacre of Christians in Armenia”.

It shows Armenian families fleeing violence. These events took place during the Hamidian massacres, organised by Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1894–1896, which are regarded as a prelude to the Armenian Genocide.

In the foreground are women, men and children; one woman holds a child in her arms. Behind them buildings burn amid flames and smoke, and armed men can be seen in the distance.
