The liberation of Shushi, 1992

In May 1992 the Armenian forces of Artsakh prepared the decisive operation to liberate Shushi. This strategic town posed a threat to Stepanakert and the surrounding settlements.

The operation was carefully planned. Small groups of fighters fought in difficult conditions against an enemy superior in numbers and equipment. After heavy fighting the town came under the control of the Armenian forces. The liberation of Shushi changed the course of the war, secured the safety of the civilian population and strengthened the positions of our fighters.

In the photograph armed fighters stand in front of a large stone building. Several of them hold a flag bearing an inscription and an emblem. A lorry stands on the right.
