King Oshin's 1307 charter for the merchants of Montpellier

A photograph of the original 1307 document in which King Oshin, ruler of Cilician Armenia, grants tax privileges to the merchants of Montpellier, giving them the right to enter the ports of the Cilician kingdom freely and to trade there.

Oshin Hetumian (10 January 1283 – 20 July 1320) was the 13th king of Cilician Armenia and the 21st ruler of Cilicia, of the Hetumid dynasty. He was the youngest son of King Levon II and Queen Keran. On 17 November 1307, near the fortress of Anazarbus (Anavarza), the young King Levon IV and his uncle Hetum II were killed in a trap set by a Mongol commander. Oshin's elder brother, the former king Smbat, challenged him for the throne, but Oshin prevailed. His official coronation took place on 4 September 1309 in Tarsus, in the Church of Saint Sophia.

The sheet bears handwritten Armenian text, with a line in red ink at the bottom and the blue stamp of the Montpellier municipal archives.
