Silver Gospel cover, Caesarea, 1691
This cover of gilded silver, decorated with enamel and precious stones, was made for a 13th-century Gospel written in Armenian. It is an example of the work of 17th-century silversmiths of Caesarea (Kayseri). The front and back covers bear the signature of Astvatsatur Shahamir, Caesarea, 1691.
The centre of the front cover shows the Adoration of the Shepherds, and above it the Kings following the star. On the inscription surrounded by angels one can read “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace”. Around the edges, vine and grape-cluster ornaments on green enamel are set with red, turquoise and other stones.
The cover was used for a Gospel copied and illustrated with miniatures in the 13th century by Grigor of Cilicia.
