Grigor Narekatsi in a miniature

Grigor Narekatsi was an outstanding Armenian poet, philosopher and theologian, a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church and of the Catholic Church. His lyrical poem ‘Book of Lamentations’ is one of the greatest masterpieces not only of Armenian but of world literature.

In the miniature Narekatsi is shown standing against a gold background, with a halo around his head, wearing a red cloak and holding a book. On both sides of him is an Armenian inscription in which the name ‘Grigor’ can be read.
