“Armenia Capta” Roman denarius
This silver denarius was struck in 20–18 BC, in the reign of Augustus Caesar. The photograph shows both sides of the coin side by side. The obverse bears the portrait of Augustus; the reverse shows an Armenian tiara (crown), a bow and a quiver as symbols of Armenian royal power and its insignia.
The inscription “Armenia Capta” on the reverse is a proclamation of Roman victory. It recalls the political event in which Armenia was presented as a country that had come under Rome’s control.
