Hayk, the Legendary Forefather of the Armenian People

Hayk is the legendary forefather of the Armenian people and the founder of the legendary Haykazuni dynasty. According to biblical-Christian tradition, he is one of the descendants of the biblical Torgom (Togarmah). The legend of Hayk is preserved in the History of Armenia by Movses Khorenatsi (5th century). Among the “forefathers” of the Caucasian peoples, he is the first among equals.

The painting dates from the early 19th century. It shows a warrior in a helmet, armour and a red cloak, holding a bow. Beside him is a white banner bearing a dragon; under a shelter lies the body of a man pierced by an arrow, and a map is spread at his feet. The canvas bears Armenian inscriptions.
