The ruined Armenian quarter of Smyrna, 1922
The ruined Armenian quarter of Smyrna (Izmir) in 1922.
During the Smyrna massacre at least thousands of the city’s Armenian and Greek inhabitants were killed. Turkish sources claim that Armenians and Greeks started the fire in order to tarnish the reputation of the Turkish military. Today only a few tens of thousands of Christian Armenians remain in Turkey.
The photograph shows a street with piles of stones and ruined buildings on both sides. At the top is an inscription in French: “Turkey”.
