View of Adana
Adana lies on the Seyhan River, 50 km from the Mediterranean coast. The city was part of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, had strategic importance and carried on a lively trade with the cities of Asia Minor and Syria. At the beginning of the 20th century 41.8 percent of the 490,000 inhabitants of the province of Adana were Armenians and only 15.9 percent were Turks. It was the seat of the Adana diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
By decision of the Turkish authorities, Armenian schools, houses, gardens and churches were destroyed and the Armenian population was exterminated. Today Adana is a major industrial centre.
The photograph shows the roofs of the city, a minaret and an arched stone bridge.
