Armenian monastery of Saint Paul the Apostle in Tarsus
The photograph shows the Armenian monastery of Saint Paul the Apostle in the city of Tarsus in Cilicia, built in the 12th century, during the period of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. It stood on the site where, according to tradition, the house of Saint Paul's parents was located. Tarsus is regarded as the birthplace of Saint Paul.
The picture shows a domed church with arched entrances, an entrance porch with columns, iron grille doors and a carved cross on the façade.
In the second half of the 20th century, when Cilicia was under Turkish control, the monastery was completely destroyed by a decision taken in 1963.
