A little Hamshen girl

The photograph shows a little Hamshen girl. The Hamshentsi, or Hamshen Armenians (also called Hemshin or Hemshil), are a distinct group of Armenians who profess Islam and partly Christianity. They live on the south-eastern coast of the Black Sea, from the province of Samsun in northern Turkey to southern Russia.

The smiling girl rests her cheek on her hand. She wears a headscarf with a yellow and green pattern, with strings of beads and round metal ornaments across her forehead and around her face. She wears a green waistcoat.
