The Dudan Chasm near Tigranakert

Dudan is a vertical cave about 100 metres deep in Western Armenia, near Tigranakert (Diyarbakır). In 1915 the Ottomans threw into it the bodies of hundreds of innocent men and women, Assyrians and Armenian martyrs.

Every year the descendants of the survivors of the 1915 Genocide come here and throw flowers down into it. According to the source, it is one of the largest graves of the Assyrian and Armenian victims of the Genocide.

In the photograph people stand at the edge of a deep crack between the rocks; a woman is bending over and looking down.
