Mamure Castle on the Mediterranean coast
This fortress on the Mediterranean coast is called Mamure. It was built in the 13th century, during the period of power of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. The castle was an important naval stronghold and protected the kingdom’s borders from attacks by pirates and enemies.
The Cilician kingdom existed from 1198 to 1375. Mamure is one of the few fortresses preserved from that period.
The photograph shows the castle from above, with high crenellated walls and round and square towers. It stands right on the seashore, with a town and mountains in the distance.
