Aram Vruyr's son beside a khachkar in Jugha, 1915
The photograph was taken in 1915 in the medieval cemetery of Old Jugha (Julfa) in Nakhijevan. It shows the son of the researcher Aram Vruyr beside an Armenian khachkar.
The young man wears a patterned cap and a dark shirt. He leans his arm on a tall khachkar, at whose centre is a cross within an arched frame, surrounded by interlaced patterns. Human figures and winged animals are carved in the upper part, and a round ornament below. Other khachkars can be seen behind.
The Jugha cemetery was famous for holding the largest collection of Armenian khachkars in the world. Most of these medieval monuments were later destroyed.
