Excavations at Ani led by Nicholas Marr
The photograph relates to the archaeological excavations carried out in the ruins of the medieval city of Ani, in the Kars province. The work was conducted in the early 20th century under the direction of Nicholas Marr. In the ruined and deserted city, layers of the Armenian capital's past were uncovered: cathedrals, statues and urban structures that testify to Ani's former power and culture.
The photograph shows the stone remains of a ruined building: half-columns, a column with a carved top and fragments with carved ornament. On the right stands a bearded man in traditional dress.
