Hovhannes Shiraz and his last wish
The poet Hovhannes Shiraz was born in 1915 in Alexandropol (Gyumri). His father was killed by the Turks during the capture of Alexandropol. He spent his childhood in an orphanage and ran away from it when he was about to be adopted by a family leaving for the USA, because he did not want to leave Armenia. He dreamed of seeing Ararat within Armenia.
After Shiraz's death in 1984, one of his sons revealed that the poet's heart had not been buried with him. In 2006 climbers from Yerevan State University ascended Ararat and laid the heart to rest at the summit, fulfilling Shiraz's last wish.
The photograph shows an elderly woman in a dark headscarf and a middle-aged man in a suit and tie. The source does not say who they are.
